Manchuria Incident
Ever since the late 1890s, the Japanese have been interested in Manchuria, a part of china, for its resources. Furthermore, during the 1930s, Japan faced a major economic depression. Prompted by their lack of money, Japan decided to invade Manchuria. But, they needed an excuse to do so. So, Lieutenant Suemori Komoto planted explosions near the tracks, and detonated the bomb.
Manchurian Invasion
After the explosion, Chinese soldiers gathered around the site of the explosion. Immediately, Japan claimed that China ( which was part of their plan) detonated the bomb, and invaded Manchuria.

League Of Nations
China, defenseless against the Japanese, pleaded to the League of Nations for help. The League investigated the railroad explosion, and a year later, declared Japan at fault. After a vote, the nations voted, and declared that Japan must give Manchuria back to China. Japan instead decided to leave the League of Nations.
Japan later went on to take over China, Indonesia, and half the Pacific Ocean.
